Job description

Web designers and developers research, design, develop and produce Internet and Intranet sites. They are employed in computer software development firms, information technology consulting firms, information technology units throughout the private and public sectors, or they may be self-employed.

Job duties

Web designers and developers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Consult with clients to develop and document Web site requirements
  • Prepare mock-ups and storyboards
  • Develop Web site architecture and determine hardware and software requirements
  • Source, select and organize information for inclusion and design the appearance, layout and flow of the Web site
  • Create and optimize content for the Web site using a variety of graphics, database, animation and other software
  • Plan, design, write, modify, integrate and test Web-site related code
  • Conduct tests and perform security and quality controls
  • May lead and co-ordinate multidisciplinary teams to develop Web site graphics, content, capacity and interactivity
  • May research and evaluate a variety of interactive media software products
Typical background

Educational requirements: Post-secondary degree or diploma in computer science, information technology, engineering or related field.

Experience: One-to-five years of related work experience.

Job requirements: Work closely with clients to design, develop, and distribute marketing and communications materials in various media formats (e.g. emails, web banners, brochures). Develop standardized visual design and user interaction components to optimize client’s web presence. Maintain, modernize, and monitor clients’ complete web presence. Develop, test, and maintain all web user interfaces and web-based applications. Work closely with software development team to develop code, test, and debug new and existing software. In-depth knowledge of web application/programming languages (e.g. HTML, HTML 5, CSS, JavaScript, NET Framework, SQL Server, Java, etc.). Strong troubleshooting skills and attention to details. Knowledge of mobile platforms and other emerging technologies a major requirement for many roles. Visual web design and/or graphics design considered a strong asset. Experience working with commercial APIs (e.g. Google Maps, Salesforce) considered a strong asset. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work closely with clients and identify their business needs. Flexibility and creativity to work on various projects.
