The Regional Municipality of Waterloo is made up of three cities: Waterloo, Kitchener, and Cambridge. Situated 93 km southwest of Toronto, it has a regional population of about 624,000.
Waterloo has a strong knowledge and service-based economy with significant insurance and high-tech sectors, and two universities. The city's largest employers are Sun Life Financial, the City of Waterloo, Manulife Financial, and other insurance brokerages and carrier companies.
The municipality is home to think tanks focuses on theoretical physics; innovative research in the computer, engineering, mathematical and physical sciences; and international governance challenges.
Waterloo is part of Canada's Technology Triangle (CTT), a joint economic development initiative that markets the region internationally (despite its name, CTT does not focus exclusively on promoting technology industries, but on all aspects of economic development).
Waterloo has a strong technology sector with hundreds of high-tech firms and high-profile tech companies. Many high-tech companies, with headquarters in other jurisdictions, take advantage of the concentration of high-tech employees in the Waterloo area and have research and development centres in the region.
